Emily Bland (b. 1988) is a British-French painter based in Berlin since 2012. The primary focus of Bland’s paintings is the comprehension of abstraction. Using man-made structures as well as natural forms to inspire her work, Bland incorporates the contrast between organic and inorganic, perspicuous and ambiguous.
Bland’s working process involves dipping into a bank of tools, technique and knowledge to intuitively paint her pieces block by block, layer by layer. The outcome is a unique experience for each viewer, who uses their own individual interpretation of the painting to balance the discordance and make light of its contrasting elements. Aligned with the belief that there is much yet to be explored in the world of contemporary abstract art, Bland interacts with her audience by confusing and calming, teasing and placating.
